| It is not certain who built the first dwelling in the hollow or when. The foundation of the farmhouses’ central dining room, with fireplace and bedroom above, suggest a late 18th century structure. A two-story, three room clapboard house was built in the 1850's. Later a shed kitchen was added. In the 1940's two side rooms for bedrooms were added and the entire house was bricked over. Several more renovations and additions have been added since 1984. Accommodations offer: three bedrooms with private baths, one with a fireplace and whirlpool. One of the upstairs bedrooms was frequently visited by a sad female ghost believed to be a red cross nurse from the civil war. The house was blessed in 1957 and the ghost has never returned. |

The cottage, originally chestnut batten-board, located 15 feet from the main house also suggests early history. The original two story building with fireplace downstairs lead to a bedroom upstairs by a built-in step ladder. In 1987 the cottage was renovated and an adjacent two story suite was added, creating two separate living quarters. These accommodations offer living areas downstairs and bedrooms upstairs. Quaint amenities include one side with a full kitchen, whirlpool room with sky light, and franklin coal/wood burning stove. The original side of the cottage offers a fireplace downstairs in its sitting room. The warmth and hospitality of Sleepy Hollow reflect Virginia tradition and the reputation of James and Dolley Madison's Orange County. |
